I’ve always mentioned things that I want to do before I die as being on my bucket list, but I’ve never had an actual bucket list. Emma and I talk all the time about things we want to do before we kick the bucket. We very easily decided that we would like experiences over possessions. We want to travel the world and do extraordinary things.
While living in the Washington, D.C. Metro area for the past two years, I’ve had the opportunity to visit a lot of special places. I’ve visited the West Wing of the White House, I’ve bowled in the White House, I’ve listened -from the second row- to President Trump give a national speech on Afghanistan, and much more. Doing these things has taught me that I don’t want a life full of material possessions. I want a life full of great experiences to tell my children and grandchildren about someday. Below is a short list of what I would consider to be on my bucket-list.
Hike the entire Appalachian Trail
This is something I’ve dreamed of doing since I was small. Emma and I have hiked approximately 30 miles of the AT and we have enjoyed every step of it. We may not have enjoyed it at the exact time we were hiking it, but looking back on it, it was an amazing time. We experienced great views of mountains, we were able to bond, and we were able to get closer to nature. I don’t necessary want to hike the whole AT at once unless I somehow get a lot of free-time from somewhere. A week or so at a time would be great.
Visit the Amazon Rainforest
While I’ll admit I don’t know everything about the Amazon Rainforest, I do know that it is an unbelievable site to see nature at its finest. I havealways loved walking through the wilderness and exploring. One of my best friends growing up was blessed to live in the sticks and we stayed in the woods for a tremendous amount of our childhood. I guess while I’m there I can check out how the fishing is!
I would love to visit Rome and see the beautiful architecture. Even the fountains in Rome are amazing! I would love to visit the Sistine Chapel and see the amazing works of Michelangelo. Who doesn’t want to see this though? Plus who doesn’t want to go see the Colosseum?
Write a Book
My book may not sell very well, but it is my goal to write one anyway. Hopefully I’ll be successful someday and I can write a book about how I got there from where I started. It has been an interesting ride so far and that someday I can pass on some life advice to others. My favorite Radio Show Host is Bobby Bones. I’ve read his book twice because it is the perfect example of how not to give up. He had a worse start to life than I did and he is highly successful. I would like for my book to be similar to his.
Complete a Marathon
While I amy have completed a few tv show marathons, I would like to actually run a marathon. For the past two years that I have been stationed in the DC Metro area I have seen all of the hype about the Marine Corps Marathon. Both years I have said, “Maybe next year.” Well two have passed and I still haven’t even trained for one. Luckily for me, Emma wants to run one too. Running a marathon together will hopefully give me the little boost I need to actually go do it. I believe that doing it together will be a wonderful experience.
Buy My Mom a House
My parents gave me everything they could while I was growing up. It was enough, too. They gave me more than they had growing up – by a ton – and they always told me to give my children better than I had. After my dad got sick my mom had to get a job. She’s worked 40 to 60 hours a week for as long as I can remember. She deserves the world, but I hope one day I can at least give her a nicer place to live.
